What to Do When Someone Dies in a Care Home

When someone dies in a residential aged care facility, staff are experienced in supporting families and managing the immediate process. This guide explains what typically happens next.

What the care home will do

Care home staff will:

  • Arrange for the death to be certified
  • Contact the nominated Next of Kin
  • Provide guidance on next steps

They can also assist with cultural or personal requests where possible.

Funeral arrangements

Once the death has been confirmed, a funeral director can arrange to bring your loved one into care.

If a funeral bond, insurance, or prepaid plan exists, this may guide the arrangements.

Taking your time

You are not required to make decisions immediately. A funeral director can explain what needs to happen now and what can wait.

Support when you need it

If you need emotional or practical support:

  • H.Parsons Funeral Directors — 4228 9622
